VUNG TAU
VungTau sits on a peninsula of the Mekong River and The South China Sea. A small island of the tip of the peninsula is Cap St. Jacques (which is the French name for Vung Tau). During the war the town was inhabited by U.S., Australian and Korean troops. The center of the America base was the VungTau Air Base. The 36th Evacuation Hospital was located on the Air Base.
Besides the town and market Vung Tau was also home to Bao Dai's (former Emperor of Vung Tau) palace and the Buddha of Vung Tau. Two hills (monkey hill and VC hill) were landmarks.
