OLD GUEST LOG

Changes made by the ISP made the old Guest Log non-operational.  We weren't able to salvage all the info, but here are some of the comments made by our visitors. The Guest book had to be resurrected again.   I am quite sure that the majority of these email addresses are no longer operational.

Thanks for having contacted me. I had no idea such a website existed. I served as anesthesiologist during the Fall of '68; and have preserved many fond memories of the Vung Tau experience: walks thru the quaint city, dinners at the Grand Hotel, strolls along the beach, and not the least, deep philosophical discussions with our lovely barmaid Tinah. Best Wishes to all who remember this with me.

Hi 36th Evac -ers, This comes from one of the Australians of the Surgical Medical Team in the Le Loi Hospital, Vung Tau. I was the Admin Officer. I used to regularly get blood from your hospital. Can anyone send me the approx date of the Siamese twins operation. I remember seeing the two tiny babes after the separation. I am being interviewed for a history of the Aust Medical team and I want to know the approx date of the Siamese twins - from memory they came form somewhere on the Cambodian border. Also regards to the radiograpaher (Carl Larkin, hope he still plays the guitar), and to a doctor Terry somebody who always wore sneakers, when ever he visited our team house (overlooking the beach.) Cheers

Hello, My name is David Westfall. My dad, Robert Westfall, was a WW II veteran. He was a POW and received many medals including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. I want to thank you for all you are doing. I am writing to you because I recently stumbled upon something really great and I think you might be interested in it, if not for yourself, then maybe for the vets in your organization who might be looking for a way to get into business for very little money. It's called "Original Limu." It is amazing stuff! It's made from the Limu Moui plant that only grows under the Sea in Tonga. It contains an ingredient called "Fucoidan" which renews the body from the inside out at cell level. I've been taking it for only a short time and I have had some fantastic results. The great thing is that this product is two fold. Aside from the age reversing benefits of Limu, there is also a financial opportunity to be had! This is a new ground floor business that is catching fire and growing very rapidly. The company is looking for good people that would like to develop a career and that have an honest desire to succeed financially as well as a desire to help people live healthier lives. I have an honest desire to see everyone succeed and be happy and healthy. I can't explain everything in this email, but the company is called "The Limu Company" Please go to my website www.davidwestfall.originallimu.com and see for yourself. This product will revolutionize the wellness industry and the business is getting ready to explode! Please contact me with any questions you might have. Again, Thank you. I hope to talk to you soon, David Westfall David Westfall Home 417-732-6212

I noticed that I was listed on the Hospital Personnel Missing list and just wanted to check in to say that I recently became aware of the 36th Evac website and recognized my old commanders, Col Boyer and Col DuVall. I served as the Hospital Adjutant June 1967-68. I married my Red Cross girlfriend Betty Zaha who was stationed there the last 6 months of my tour. We are still married, had two wonderful children and are living in Livermore, California. Since this is the only contact portal I have found on your website, I hope my message gets to those old friends that remember me. Hopefully, Betty and I can attend the next reunion!

Aloha all. I was a guest at your facility late 1968 & early 1969. Caribou air commando medivac. Became delirious one night & woke up looking at the most beautiful woman I had ever seen peering into my eyes. After realizing she was a nurse, I looked left & right to find myself in a long room surrounded by chums all missing limbs. I remeber screaming and feeling for all parts of my anatomy. The nurses & orderlies hauled me into a refrigerated room with a few ranking hi muka mukas. Diagnosis was Malaria & exhaustion. After days of pampering and hand feeding by the fantastic staff I was able to return to surfing with my Azzie buds by day and doing night rescues in the delta. I loved the members of the 36th and Vung Tau tubes as well. If anyone has memories of my stay at your facility please drop me a line. Aloha & mahalo nui loa.

In April 1969 was in Vung Tau for a weekend and I had occassion to visit the Hexagonal Officer's Club adjacent to the Grand Hotel. I met several amazing people during that visit. One who I'll never forget was Lt. Fritizi Petruzzo. She was a nurse at the 36th Evac. Hospital -- an incredible nurse and a wonderful friend, who I'll never forget. I was so sorry to learn she died in 2001. The world is a poorer place without her.

It is Monday evening now, having returned from Las Vegas, site of the 2006 36th Evac. Reunion, just hours ago. I am still aglow from reuniting with spirits from the past, who turned out to be the same great people I knew in a war-torn land so long ago. Annie, I'll never be able to express to you my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the devotion and love that you have for all of us and your endless hours of effort to put together an opportunity for us to come together once again. My wife Shirlee was struck by the commeraderie of people separated for so long. I will continue to bask in the warmth of the reunion some some time to come and anxiously await the anouncement of the site of the next one. With the warmest regards Annie, Bob & Shirlee Saum, Camas, WA

What a great site! I came upon some old mail which reminded me I was a patient at the 36th in December "68. GOOGLED the 36th and there it was. I was sorry to hear about Lt Fritzi Petrizzo. She was from Jersey City and said Hi to all the JCites who came through. I later found out she was a roomate of my wife's best friend at JC Medical Center Nursing School. A very small world! I also remember a very pretty ward nurse named Cpt Phillips who came into the ward wearing a sunsuit one day and broke all our hearts! If that is the same Jean Philips Truscott, she is as pretty today as then. Thanks for taking good care of us all. Rich Cardillo

Great website. Is there any doctor or nurse that might remember me. A day or so after May 5, 1969, I came in with head wrapped in turban, shot in face and through ear canal and I could not see. I am sure of the date because one of my buddies got killed exactly on May 5, 1969 and I was hit in face on that same day, but not medevaced out until a day or so after. His name was Greg Odell. Government is denying my 3rd Purple Heart from that injury because they say there are no medical records. Does anybody remember me or can help me find a way to get my medical records from the 36th Evac. Hosp.? I was with RECON, 1st Div., 2nd Batt., 16th Infantry based out of Lai-Khe.

I have just found your website from the notes in the VVA Veteran. I was a patient in your hospital for a week in March 1967. My tank had been ambushed by a RPG team when we were running an errand. I recieved a piece of the RPG in my calf and then our coax machine gun blew up in my face when it jammed as we returned fire. Vung Tau was the best place I had seen in VN. It reminded me of a tropical Door County Wisconsin where I made my home. My memories of the staff and my treatment were comforting . Thanks to all for that peacful week. Gary Lapp old11e40@aol.com

My name is Charles Larsen, I was one of your first patients. I was wonded around Tay Ninh/Soui Da on the 10th of November 1966. I was initially treated in Tay Ninh and moved to Chu Chi and two days later moved to the 36th Evacuation Hospital. In Viet Nam I served as a Helicopter Crew Chief/ Flight Platoon Sargent for the 116th "Hornets" Assualt Helicopter Company. I spent about 3 and a half weeks in your fine Hospital. I enjoyed the care you gave me, the food and especially Thanksgiving Dinner. I remember nurse "Polly" Parrot; she attended the Ward next to mine. I was discharged a month after leaving the Hospital and joined the Reserves, went to OCS, graduated and continued another 26 years of service, retiring with the rank of COL from Sixth US Army in San Francisco. I served in several postions to include DA IG. Never in 28 years of service could I compare to the 26 days I spent with the 36th. You took care of me and others in worse shape. You are great people - I will not forget you - Thanks for being there for me!

THANKS, YOU ARE GETTING GOOD INFORMATION TO THE TROOPS. IT SEEMS THAT WE VETERANS ARE ALWAYS GETTING THE SHORT END OF THE STICK. VERY LITTLE WILL CHANGE IN HELPING THE DISABLED VETERANS UNTIL THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT TAKES A MORE ACTIVE ROLL IN SEEING THAT WE GETS THE BENEFITS AND HELP THAT WE RIGHTLY DESERVES. THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT USE US TO DO THEIR BIDDINGS, AND DISCARDS US LIKE OLD SHOES AFTER SERVICE, BY DUMPING US ON THE VA, WHO HAS 1/1000 THE BUDGET THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT HAVE, AND OF 1/1000 OF IT TO WASTE ON UNNECESSARY EXPENDITURES. Washington D.C has a quiet saying, "a dead soldier is a good soldier". Nothing will change ubtil this country gives veterans the rank in file support needed. The have short circuited the system so that most of us old veteran will die while waiting for a claim to clear. AS YOU KNOW THE VETERAN'S CLAIM DIES WITH HIM. NOT BITTER, BUT SUFFERING AND SEE THE TRUE PICTURE.

I served at the 36th Evac. as a medic from January 7,1968 until July of 1969. I went home and returned for a second tour of duty. Those good old days will be forever in my heart. Inever thought it could happen but when I got home ,I was homesick for Vietnam and all the nice people I left behind. I hope I meet them next year at the 2006 Convention in Las Vegas. God bless you all. I wish someone would send me an e-mail. Bye Bye for now. SP/5 Ronald W. Klimek Ward 5

CAME ACROSS YOUR SITE AFTER SEARCHING FOR THE SHARON ANN LANE FOUNDATION. WE RECENTLY DID A VETERANS BENEFIT MOTRCYCLE RUN IN DENVER AND PALN TO SEND SOME MONEY TO THE FOUNDATION. THANKS TO ALL OF THE HOSPITAL PERSONNEL FOR THEIR KIND CARE. WE GOT HIT JUST AS WE APPROACHED BIEN HOA AB IN JULY 1969. I DO NOT REMEMBER MY NURSE-I CALL HER NANCY-BUT AS I BRIEFLY AWOKE FROM THE MORPHINE-SHE KISSED ME ON THE FORHEAD AND TOLD ME I'D BE OK. AS I LOOKED AROUND AT THE FEW GUYS I COULD SEE I FULLY EXPECTED THAT SHE WOULD BE THE LAST BEAUTIFUL SIGHT I WOULD HAVE ON THIS PLANET. I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE MARINE HELICOPTER ASSOCIATION. "THE BEST MEDAL IS A SMILING SOLDIER" THANKS FOR THE LIFE YOU GAVE ME.

My room mate was Homer Groves M.D., Orthopedics. Bob Axelrod was the M.S.C. officer and Tony Zuniga was there too. Those were the days !! We definitely enjoyed eating Gen. I totally enjoyed the site, it's quality and information. Since no one related to the site remembers this individual, I would like to see you add him to the Deceased portion. His name was SP/5 Herbert Donaldson. We served on Ward 2 with Captain Kinser, until he was tranferred to the 57th Dustoff- I went to the 82d Dustoff in Soc Trang. Herb was Killed three months later on a night med-evac when their "Dustoff" chopper flew into the side of a mountain near Cu Chi. Those who knew Herb would remember his wonderful smile, great personality, red hair and his matching freckles. His is listed on the "Dustoff" Web Site and on course, on the "Wall" in Washington D.C. Sep 2 Chad Fletcher ChadFletcher@satx.rr.com

I was an observer in a "Mohawk" outfit there in Vung Tau from DEC 1967 to DEC 1968. During that time I was a patient at the 36th following an incident in March 1968 when the Mohawk I was in went down off the end of the runway. The pilot I was with drowned, but I made it out and spent some time recovering. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the care we were given. I use the plural because as I laid in the post-op I saw wonderful care being provided to all of us. The bed next to mine had a young (weren't we all?) Austrailian soldier that had lost both legs and an arm to a land mine. He was in rough shape, but the nurses ans corpsmen were always there. Looking back on it my injuries seem slight compared to many. Th 36th performed heroically and I justed wanted to take the time to say thanks, from all of us. Warest regards and thanks, Chad Fletcher

As we now have a "new" guest book thanks to Anne’s hard and diligent work I really should write a little more about my connection with the 36th’ Evacuation Hospital. After my first contact with Anne and others, my wife Pearle and I have had two wonderful visits to the US: first in 1999 when we met up with Anne, Ann Hoeffken Demolsky, Girt Baker, Bill and Nancy Lee ,and Dr Bob McLean. In addition to the folk who actually nursed this badly wounded Aussie digger back in May/June 1967 we met Hannah Moynahan Wynne and Mary O’Neil Fiorelli from the 24th all proved to be wonderful friends and provided great hospitality then in 2002 at the San Antonio reunion we met many more in addition to the guys and gals first mentioned. Many of whom I happily keep in regular contact with via the phone or e mail. All being well and God willing we will meet you all again in Las Vegas next year, the date is in the Diary, now working on getting the cash in the Bank Book.

When my unit (MSTS Vung Tau @ the AB&T Camp) came under rocket attack on 16OCT69, we sent our wounded to the 36th. Great website. I served with the 85th and 67th Evac Hospitals in Qui Nhon 1968-1969. Wish my former units had sites like this one. Surfing your site brough back my own service memories. Things I hadn't thought about in years. Being a non medical individual assigned to a medical unit, I also appreciate that you also acknowledge the contribution of those who performed the countless number of non medical related duties required to support the great work done by the dedicated medical professionals of the 44th Medical Brigade.

These memories you share have helped with my healing process. I consider myself a casualty of the Vietnam Conflict: you see, I am the daughter of LTC Roy Anthony Rada of 36th Evac Hospital '68 - '69. He did not marry my mother Nguyen Thi Hahn, Ms. Kim of the 36th Evac Hospital translator, since he was already married to Hertha Rada. My father and I met Jan. 31, 2005; however, his wife does not want him and my siblings to continue a relationship with me. So if you have any information on my father and mother, will you disclose please. I must have closure. Angelique Alsup of Maryland

Also to all the doctors, nurses, corpmen, techs. and those who worked in different capacities at the 36th I thank you for the care you gave our troops and all those who passed through "these doors".

I was assigned to the 36th from 1968 to 1969 and worked on the burn unit (I think that was ward 1) and also ward 5. I am now retired (from the USAR) and living in Omaha, Nebraska. I ran into Candy Curly (now Ostott). She and I were in the same reserve unit together. Her last known address was Ft. Leavenworth, KS. (Married to a general.) I have a few pictures and memories of the time in Vung Tau. I think I tried to pickle my brain while I was there. I also registered with the VA for agent orange exposure and Type II diabetes. That's about all. This is a great web site.

You folks took care of me in June of 1969 (my last month in country) at Vung Tau. I worked at the airport terminal (Air Force - 8th Aerial Port, Detachment One). I was over taken by a pretty intense fever and could not control my shaking while I was walking from the barracks. I flagged down a jeep who took me to the clinic. I was diagnosed with malaria and stayed in the ward for over a week. I remember the great care, the attention and the professionalism of the nurses, doctors and staff. I will never forget you folks. Thanks to all for keeping me going and well enough to finally take the long flight home. I well wishes to all the staff on this veteran's day (2004). Respectfully, Bob Rose Atlanta

Hi! Please add me to the "staff found" list. I was a Sp5, O. R. Great website, found you by doing a search for Vung Tau. Anyway, could not help but notice the comment on your links page about a Chinook landing on your helipad, almost blowing your hospital away. Think I was the guilty party, would have been sometime in late 1969, pretty close to the time you left Vung Tau. I remember we moved into your hotel after you left, later we moved into the hospital proper. I checked with our (147th ASHC) operations about landing on your pad because it seemed too small. They told me to go ahead and land there, we were carrying several litter and walking wounded patients from Dong Tam. Just remember stuff flying everywhere, glad we did not blow something down. Now you know the rest of the story. You folks take care. Al

Hello,

My father, Major Robert Kyle, CRNA, served with the 36th Evac in Vung Tau from 1967 - 1968. I was 8 or 9 years old, and can remember the sadness of having him gone, and the seriousness of Vietnam. Needless to say, Dad's time in Vietnam remains strong in the memories of him and the family. Dad has shared some of what he experienced there, and has even written a wonderful novel called, "The Fifth Season" based on his experiences.

Dad has had a place in his heart for Vietnam and all that his time there entailed. It was not all bad, as I am sure many of you would agree. And I would also imagine that many of you have trouble getting people to understand "your" Vietnam. For Vietnam belonged to each one of you, and I now understand what that means to my Dad and have the utmost respect and admiration for his experiences and memories of that year.

Anyway, I am rambling, Dad just told me about this site, and I had to add my comments. I think it is great that this site exists and even better that reunions have been, and are being, planned. What a wonderful idea.

I think Mom and Dad will be going to San Antonio, and I find myself wishing I could go with them.

My hat goes off to you all, and good luck in your lives...and I hope you all meet again.

Thanks for listening. Cindy (Kyle) Frick Thia1459@aol.com

He went to the one in 2000 and just went on and on about how great it was to see all of you again. -- sbwerger@yahoo.com

Hi Everyone! I am Sandy (Black) MacKenzie--and was an RN at the 36th Evac from Feb '67-68. I worked on the ICU ward with Gert Baker as my fearless head nurse. Right now I live in Alaska, and have for over 30 years & I love it here!

Would really love to be at the Reunion in Oct. but to my disappointment, the National Medical Assistant Association is having their Convention. It is necessary that I be at this...I need the CEU credits to maintain my certification at this time.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SORRY! OR IN 1967 WE WOULD HAVE SAID...SORRY 'BOUT THAT! Would love to hear from any of you..omega@alaska.net

I am proud of Anne Philiben for all the work she has done to have this website for all of us, her work in getting the reunions going, etc. Love Ya, Annie!

I read through the guest book and am delighted that SFC Luis Gallardo plans to attend. We served together with Richard Reed, and Dr's Ramsey, Ream, and Bechard in the initial orthopedic service. I retired as The Surgeon General in 1992 and now work in a research lab in San Antonio. Frank Ledford, MD, Lt Gen, Ret. .

I have so many memories of the 36th, Vung Tau, and so many of you folks from 1966-67. Again fate has determined I can't attend this year's reunion as we have many animals to care for and my wife is going home to visit family in Hawaii during those dates so this animal rescuer gotta keep the critters fed. If any of you can, please give a hello to me at windemede@aol.com. Those of you who are able to attend the reunion know that I will be present in spirit and thinking of the fun and memories you will be sharing. Terry Gumbert retired ANC 1983

1966 36th evac hosp smbl. On the night of the 3rd day during the motor attack. I (Gary Sapoff) was on the street next to the EM club when a 2 1/2 ton truck came down the street, when I enter the street and stopped the truck, and was I glad. The vehicle was one of ours, 36 evac. I jumped on the back of the truck to get a ride back to the unit. As we were going past the area that we left earlier that day, motor rounds were hitting all around us. The truck stalled out and a electric line was almost on the hood of the vehicle. I jumped out of the back of the truck. The driver came out and we were laying on the ground. The man running as shotgun left the truck from his side I guess. He had a weapon (m-14). Where he was  I don't know. The driver was about 10 to 15 feet from mw when he said he was hit. He was on my left side when he got hit on his right side by the motor round. I went to him and picked him up and put him over my shoulder and headed for cover. There were other guys yelling out, "over here in the bunker. The dust and dirt was flying and I followed the voices to the bunker for safety with the driver. I left him there with the MP and another wounded man. I left the area to get help and find me a weapon. I got to 36th Evac HQ and met with the SGT MAJ. He gave me a m-14 and placed me on a point after I explained they needed help over at the other gate area where I left our wounded to get backup and medical assistance. I don't know who the driver was but I would like to get in contact with him for a long awaiting update on his wounds. 37 years is a long time. Also if anyone has any information Sp4 Douglas R. Ryan please let me know.

In the morning I pay over my little pot of gold so that my wife and I can join all you fine folk next month. We are really looking forward to catching up with Big Anne, Little Anne and Gert once again. To all the others who contributed to my recovery well, if you are there I'll be wanting to shake your hand at the very least. Just saw Capt. McKeegan's message and it brought back a memory that I forgot all about.. We were having a BIG INSPECTION by Brigade Commander of the unit to include our hootch inspection. Since I was the Chaplain's assistant and relatively freer than most personnel, Cpt. Mac asked me to stay in our hootch #6 and be present for the inspection. It was so hot...I saw them inspecting the other side of the street and thought that they were working their way backwards so we would be much later....so I layed on my bunk with my shirt off so as not to look wrinkled when they came thru....little did I know that they were zig-zagging back and forth across the street from hootch to hootch...all of a sudden I hear Capt. Mac yell 'TENTION!" There I was on my bunk in my tee shirt....I will NEVER forget the look on the Captain's face...he was RED.....I was RED.....and scared...but he never really got mad....thanks, Capt.Mac....Dennis Johnson

I was looking for medical clipart and came upon your website. I am a mother of 4 grandmother of 10.

My son is in the Army and these stories have touched me in ways you will never know. My husband also served in the military during this time. He died in 1989. We lost a cousin to the Viet Nam War, there were so many questions at that time.

I thank you for sharing some of the love that also exsisted then and has continued to live within the memories and hearts of brave men and women. Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

I am not a member of your evac unit. I typed in Heidi Ubel in Google search and your web address popped up with Heidi's name. I thought initially this was a missing in action list and I felt stunned. Heidi is from Knapp, Wisconsin and her father John Knapp is still listed in the white pages. I have not seen Heidi since 1966, but as you can tell, she remains in my thoughts. My email address is onex@mindspring.com. I hopes this helps your discovery process.

Thanks for the memories although very short. I was assigned to the 36th Evac Hospital late in 1965. The day before I was to board a plane I was pulled from the ranks and sent to Walter Read Hospital in Washington DC to undergo open hart sergery for a ASD. Thanks to Colonel Bruger a fine Cardiac Surgeon I will be turning 60 years old this January. Thanks to all that made that plane and served in Viet Nam for the 36th taking care of so many men and women in need.

My name is Joe Boynton and I served with the 36th from 1966-1967. I will never forget my Viet Nam experiences. I was assigned to the mess hall as a cook. Also,I was assigned to the officer's villa in down town Vung Tau.I have not seen any references on the web page of mess hall personnel. From the Mess Hall personal ,I remember you. I spent a lot of time in the cooks tent. They have a small family room in the back of the tent. Sp/5 Angel Pizarro (pancho) veteran of the Korean War and Ex-member of the 65th Infantry Regiment was cook and he prepared all the goodies when we have Mass casualty and spent a lot of time in the Operating Room. When we have a chance to take a break, there was Pizarro and you with Goodies to eat and drink. Many time at 03:00 hrs, or 15:00 hrs. See you at the next reunion in Washington D.C. Nov 2004. Sfc. Hi, my name is Mark Fleming, i am currently in my final year at the University of Paisley in Glasgow studying for my BA Hons in Music. The main bulk of my course work this year revolves around my Thesis.

My thesis subject is concerned with the effects of music during the Vietnam War, especially concerned with the troops views and their perceptions of songs and the songs lyrical content. In essence did the troops see the songs in the same way that, for example, they are now used in television and movies that portray the era.

If you have any story's or views on this subject i would be extremely grateful for your help

Thanks and i look forward to hearing from you. E mail: markfleming_uk@yahoo.co.uk18
