Dr. John F. Ryan
September 4, 1933 - August 26, 2009 Dr. John Ryan, age 75, of
Stone Lake, WI died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Ontario, Canada as the
result of a boating accident.
John Francis Ryan II was born on September 4, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, the
son of John F. and Ann (Gainley) Ryan I. John received his medical degree
from Loyola University in Chicago in 1959 and served his internship and
residency at University of Chicago Clinics. Dr. Ryan practiced general
surgery in Chicago, IL from 1965 to 1967. He served on active duty with the
U.S. Army Expeditionary Forces in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was an
advisor to the 6th Vietnam Airborne and retired with the rank of major.
After being honorably discharged, Dr. Ryan practiced general surgery in San
Jose California from 1969 until 2003. He served as chairman of the
Department of Surgery at West Valley Hospital and as president of the Santa
Clara County Surgical Society from 1979-1980 and was re-elected to that
position in 1984. He also served on the Credential Committee, Peer Review
Committee, Tumor Board, Morbidity and Mortality Committees of various
hospitals. After moving to Stone Lake, WI, he practiced at the Hayward Area
Memorial Hospital from 2003 until his retirement from active practice in
2005.
John’s passion was musky fishing and he was a member of Muskies Inc since
1980 as well as a member of its Board of Directors. He was an active member
of the Hayward Chapter of Muskies Inc. since 2003 as well as a member of
Walleyes for Northwest Wisconsin and of the Hayward Rod and Gun Club. John
was a licensed fishing guide. He also obtained his real estate license and
was presently a realtor with Stone Lake Realty. He joined the Hayward Lions
in 2005 and was chairman of the Lions’ Musky Festival Fishing Contest for
the past four years. He was currently the Sawyer County Coroner, having been
elected to that position in 2006.
John enjoyed volunteering with the many organizations with which he was
active as well as spending time with his family, his friends, and his dogs.
He will be greatly missed by all of them.
John is survived by his wife Maureen of Stone Lake, WI; three sons: John
(Linda) Ryan III of San Jose, CA, Keith (Linda) Ryan of Hayward, WI, and
Kevin Ryan of Colorado Springs, CO; one daughter, Kimberly (Todd) Tilden of
Hayward, WI; five grandchildren; one sister, Kathy (Ed) Condon of Chicago,
IL, and nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept.
3rd 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward. Visitation will be held
on Wednesday evening from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel
Funeral Home and again on Thursday morning at the church for one hour prior
to the service. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.

Gert BAKER
LONG LIVE GERTRUDE!
LTC Gertrude E. Baker, Army Nurse Corps, (Ret) died after a long battle
with Alzheimers on 8 July 2009. Gert was born in Brooklyn, New York on 11
July 1937. She was preceded in death by her father, Reginald H. Baker and
mother Salome' Baker, brother Roderick Baker and brother Reginald H. Baker
Jr. She is survived by her brother Charles F. Baker, his wife Bonita and
children Cornell Baker and Aliah Baker-Holman. She is also survived by
numerous nephews and nieces. She is also survived by special friends
Victoria Bennett, Lars Hundere, Grace and Maris, Laurie Aust and Marian
Walls [ and numerous friends and colleagues too numerous to list here.
Suffice it say, everyone knew Gertrude! ] Gert graduated from Bellevue and
Mills School of Nursing, New York City, in 1958. She joined the Army Nurse
Corps and began her career at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Her travels in the
Army took her to many places in the US to include Brooke Army Medical
Center. She served in the Republic of Vietnam at the 36th Evacuation
Hospital. LTC Bakers' awards include the National Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious
Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Republic
of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class. Following her retirement
from the Army in 1977, Gert pursued another goal that she was passionate
about. She attended the University of Incarnate Word and obtained her
degree in Theatre Arts. She is well known in San Antonio as a performer,
organizer and director. She served on many boards and panels with
Jump-Start Performance Company, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, The
Alamo Theatre Arts Council, Carver Community Cultural Center to name but a
few. Gert collected many pieces of local and Mexican art. She was an
active member of the Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum, and the Witte
Museum. She was actively involved in fund raising and most notably with
the Espernaza Peace and Justice Center, the Carver and University of the
Incarnate Word Scholarship Program. She was an outstanding performer and
was in many plays such as "A my name is Alice", "High Yellow Rose" and
"Night Mother". She enjoyed reading stories and poems for audiences and
was very active in this venue. Gert loved to begin her day with a long
luncheon with friends and maybe do some shopping and the evening would
include a theatre arts production, a fund raiser, attending a showing of
new artworks followed by a breakfast at Earl Abels, the original one on
Broadway. Gert was an avid sports fan and followed the Spurs and Silver
Stars Basketball games closely. Gert was also an active member of The Army
Nurse Corps Association and the 36th Evacuation Hospital Reunion Group.
She supported the AMEDD Museum, Fort Sam Houston, Tx and was a frequent
shopper in the Gift Shop. My, how Gert loved to shop!! Gertrude will be
missed by all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Army Nurse
Corps Association, The AMEDD Museum, Espernaza Peace and Justice Center.
The family would like to thank the care providers at the Audie Murphy VA
GEM/Memory Clinic, Esplanade Gardens Assisted Living Facility and Odyssey
Hospice for the care and compassion provided to Gertrude and family. A
visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home from 6 PM to 8 PM on
Thursday, 16 July 2009. The Funeral Service will be held at Sunset Funeral
Home Chapel, at 12:00 Noon on Friday, 17 July 2009 with burial following
