Dr. John F. Ryan September 4, 1933 - August 26, 2009

 Dr. John Ryan, age 75, of Stone Lake, WI died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Ontario, Canada as the result of a boating accident. John Francis Ryan II was born on September 4, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John F. and Ann (Gainley) Ryan I.

John received his medical degree from Loyola University in Chicago in 1959 and served his internship and residency at University of Chicago Clinics. Dr. Ryan practiced general surgery in Chicago, IL from 1965 to 1967. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army Expeditionary Forces in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was an advisor to the 6th Vietnam Airborne and retired with the rank of major. After being honorably discharged.

 Dr. Ryan practiced general surgery in San Jose California from 1969 until 2003. He served as chairman of the Department of Surgery at West Valley Hospital and as president of the Santa Clara County Surgical Society from 1979-1980 and was re-elected to that position in 1984. He also served on the Credential Committee, Peer Review Committee, Tumor Board, Morbidity and Mortality Committees of various hospitals.

After moving to Stone Lake, WI, he practiced at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital from 2003 until his retirement from active practice in 2005. John’s passion was musky fishing and he was a member of Muskies Inc since 1980 as well as a member of its Board of Directors.

He was an active member of the Hayward Chapter of Muskies Inc. since 2003 as well as a member of Walleyes for Northwest Wisconsin and of the Hayward Rod and Gun Club. John was a licensed fishing guide. He also obtained his real estate license and was presently a realtor with Stone Lake Realty. He joined the Hayward Lions in 2005 and was chairman of the Lions’ Musky Festival Fishing Contest for the past four years.

He was currently the Sawyer County Coroner, having been elected to that position in 2006.

John enjoyed volunteering with the many organizations with which he was active as well as spending time with his family, his friends, and his dogs. He will be greatly missed by all of them. John is survived by his wife Maureen of Stone Lake, WI; three sons: John (Linda) Ryan III of San Jose, CA, Keith (Linda) Ryan of Hayward, WI, and Kevin Ryan of Colorado Springs, CO; one daughter, Kimberly (Todd) Tilden of Hayward, WI; five grandchildren; one sister, Kathy (Ed) Condon of Chicago, IL, and nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3rd 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home and again on Thursday morning at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.

Joe Louis White, 70, a retired U.S. Army first sergeant and a retired VA hospital ward secretary, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at home.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Greater Rising Star Baptist Church, 5313 Como Drive, the Rev. Floyd Brooks, pastor, officiating. Interment: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Morris-Bates Mortuary. Wake: with the family present 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church.
Survivors: He leaves behind those to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years, Shirley White; daughters, Tina Scott (Joe) and Yolanda Winston (Kevin); sons, Joe White Jr. (Cynthia) and Darrell Franklin (Beverly); sisters, Gracie Tucker, Sallie Hawkins, Doris White and Barbara White; brothers, Edward White and William Michael "Mike" White (Cynthia); eight grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Carl D. Anderson

Carl D. Anderson, 82, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away October 23, 2010, at his home in Hampton. He was born April 27, 1928, in Ellis Township, Southern Hardin County, Iowa, to Roy W. and Nettie (Shaner) Anderson. Carl attended schools in the Cottage and Dows area and later received his GED and nurses licence in the military. He was united in marriage to Judy Rodemeyer on November 12, 1977, in Hampton, Iowa. Carl served his country in the United States Army for twenty years, during WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He worked at Farmland in Iowa Falls and also was a LPN. Carl was a life long member of the VFW Post 733 and belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Carl was also a member of the AA for 33 years. He is survived by his wife Judy Anderson of Hampton, sister Helen Hilpiper, brother George (Darlene) Anderson, daughter Carla Anderson of Denver, Colorado, son Steve Anderson of Denver, Colorado, son Terry (Jackie) Buss of Hampton, son AJ (Lisa) Buss of Hampton, daughter Teresa (David) Fielding of Hampton, grandchildren Shawn and Shane Anderson, Gwen Buss, Christian (Desi) Buss, Becky (Jerry) Tellis, Nathan (Andrea) Buss, Karie Buss, Andrew Paulson, Cameron Buss, Skylar Buss, Ian Fielding and Abbey Fielding, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janet Cooper, brothers Floyd, Alfred and Robert Anderson, one infant brother, two sons Michael Anderson and Jeffrey Buss and one niece Beverly Craig.

LONG LIVE GERTRUDE!

LTC Gertrude E. Baker, Army Nurse Corps, (Ret) died after a long battle with Alzheimers on 8 July 2009.

Gert was born in Brooklyn, New York on 11 July 1937. She was preceded in death by her father, Reginald H. Baker and mother Salome' Baker, brother Roderick Baker and brother Reginald H. Baker Jr. She is survived by her brother Charles F. Baker, his wife Bonita and children Cornell Baker and Aliah Baker-Holman. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. She is also survived by special friends Victoria Bennett, Lars Hundere, Grace and Maris, Laurie Aust and Marian Walls [ and numerous friends and colleagues too numerous to list here. Suffice it say, everyone knew Gertrude! ] Gert graduated from Bellevue and Mills School of Nursing, New York City, in 1958. She joined the Army Nurse Corps and began her career at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Her travels in the Army took her to many places in the US to include Brooke Army Medical Center. She served in the Republic of Vietnam at the 36th Evacuation Hospital. LTC Bakers' awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class.

Following her retirement from the Army in 1977, Gert pursued another goal that she was passionate about. She attended the University of Incarnate Word and obtained her degree in Theatre Arts. She is well known in San Antonio as a performer, organizer and director. She served on many boards and panels with Jump-Start Performance Company, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, The Alamo Theatre Arts Council, Carver Community Cultural Center to name but a few. Gert collected many pieces of local and Mexican art. She was an active member of the Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum, and the Witte Museum.

She was actively involved in fund raising and most notably with the Espernaza Peace and Justice Center, the Carver and University of the Incarnate Word Scholarship Program. She was an outstanding performer and was in many plays such as "A my name is Alice", "High Yellow Rose" and "Night Mother". She enjoyed reading stories and poems for audiences and was very active in this venue. Gert loved to begin her day with a long luncheon with friends and maybe do some shopping and the evening would include a theatre arts production, a fund raiser, attending a showing of new artworks followed by a breakfast at Earl Abels, the original one on Broadway. Gert was an avid sports fan and followed the Spurs and Silver Stars Basketball games closely.

Gert was also an active member of The Army Nurse Corps Association and the 36th Evacuation Hospital Reunion Group. She supported the AMEDD Museum, Fort Sam Houston, Tx and was a frequent shopper in the Gift Shop. My, how Gert loved to shop!!

Gertrude will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Army Nurse Corps Association, The AMEDD Museum, Espernaza Peace and Justice Center. The family would like to thank the care providers at the Audie Murphy VA GEM/Memory Clinic, Esplanade Gardens Assisted Living Facility and Odyssey Hospice for the care and compassion provided to Gertrude and family. A visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home from 6 PM to 8 PM on Thursday, 16 July 2009. The Funeral Service will be held at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, at 12:00 Noon on Friday, 17 July 2009 with burial following at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. E. Val Liberace, M.D., 69, of West Chester, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at home.

He was the husband of Kathleen Liberace.

Born in Darby on Oct. 25, 1939, he was the son of the late Ettore V. Liberace and the late Stephanie Marks.

He was a 1957 graduate of Msr. Bonner High School, St. Joseph's University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

He was a medical doctor. Dr. Liberace served with the 36th Evac. Hospital in Vietnam. 

In addition to his wife, he was the beloved father of Christopher Paul, Steven Patrick and Val Joseph; grandfather of Michael, Tristan, Sebastian and Hannah Liberace; and brother of Rita Eckhart.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Ss. Peter & Paul church, Boot Road, East Goshen, where friends may call after 9:15 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester.

Richard J. "Dick" Christensen

OVID - Richard J. "Dick" Christensen, age 69, of Ovid, died Saturday (December 3) at Geneva General Hospital.
A private reception will be held by Dick's family to celebrate his life, as he had requested during his recent illness. Prayers of committal and military honors will be held at Samp­son Veterans Memorial Cemetery in June of 2012, to which all are invited to join his family for the ceremony. A picnic reception will follow at Sampson State Park on the day of the burial.

Dick was born on Septem­ber 22, 1942, in Ithaca, a son of the late William and Catherine (Keenan) Christensen. He was a lifelong resident of the area, graduating from Ovid Central School in 1960. He attended Cortland State Teachers College, and graduated from the Willard School of Nursing. Upon graduation, he entered the US Army and served as a nurse in a military hospital in Vietnam. During his professional career he was employed at Willard Psychiatric Center and retired from the Dick Van­Dyke Addiction Treatment Center in 2000. He loved hunting deer in the deep woods of the Finger Lakes National Forest, was an avid sky diver and became an accomplished bowler later in life, competing in numerous leagues and tournaments in Trumans­burg, Ithaca, and Geneva. Dick was also elected as Seneca County Coroner, serving from 1994 to 2003. His gentle demeanor and genuine kindness will be fondly remembered by his family and the community.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; a son, Lars Christensen of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Elka (Michael Brewster) Christensen of Sydney, Australia; his brothers, John "Jack" (Emma) Christensen of Hayts Corners, Carl (Gail) Christensen of Willard, a brother in law, Doug (Carol) Ferrell of Binghamton, and sisters in law, Linda (Bob) Hart of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Joan (Jim) Bartholomew of El Cerrito, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Paul, earlier this year.

Joseph R. Brien, Jr. Joe was born September 7, 1947 in Minot, North Dakota to Joseph and Eunice Fuller Brien. His family came west to Tacoma when Joe was a young boy, and he graduated from Puyallup High School in 1966. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a combat medic. He was a proud tribal member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota. After the military he was a commercial fisherman on the purse seiner La Touche and later retired from Cement Masons Local Union 528. His early retirement was due to Parkinson's disease as a result of exposure to Agent Orange. Joe is survived by his wife Mary in Roy, three daughters, Janelle (Scott) Hite in Auburn, Melinda (Mark) Atchley in Auburn, and Shelly (Joe Higgins) Brien in Roy, two sons, Joshua (Kassie) Schwinger in Burien and Joe C. Brien in Roy, his brother Jerry Brien in Tacoma, three sisters, Linda (Jim) Jacobsen in Tacoma, Joan (Randy) Horttor in Randle, and Debby (John) Brynjulfson in Santa Ana, California, his special Aunt Judi in Allyn, as well as eight grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joe's family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Deborah Hammond at the American Lake VA Hospital and the Franciscan Hospice Team for their compassionate care.
